The Honolulu Classic Introduction

Between Jan 1, 1939 and March 15, 1939, Charles Howard Duffy sailed and competed in the Honolulu Classic, which was a race between Long Beach / Los Angeles harbor and Diamond Head, Oahu. The yacht race covered a distance of some 2,225 nautical miles and his boat, the “LADY JO” competed against thirty eight other vessels in the 15th running on this race. C. H. Duffy served on the “LADY JO” as a Ordinary Seaman which is not quite the title one would expect from a Chemical Engineer.

The following articles and photos are taken from his journals, which he wrote by hand during the race, and later transcribed and edited into a book.

Dedication

This account is dedicated to one affectionately known as “Rawfish Rosie” aboard the yacht “LADY JO” – The author

Forward

It is my original intention to write a complete day-to-day account of everything that happened aboard the yacht “LADY JO” on the trip described herein: but, it is only after one starts to do such a thing that he finds that is not possible, except in isolated instances , to describe the numerous incidents that go to make up the fun ad experiences of the members of the crew. It is possible to do no more than make generalities concerning each day’s activities. Actually, I have even failed to include the notes of my scientific investigation of “Wave Motion of Unbounded Boies of Dilute Aqueous Salt Solution”, of which, I make quite a close, first hand study. However, just as it was written at the time indicated, it is now presented.
